Pulling Ink: Build A One-Color Press & Start Screenprinting zine

Pulling Ink: Build A One-Color Press & Start Screenprinting zine

by Rio Safari

Pulling Ink is Rio Safari's brand-new look at doin'-it-yourself screenprinting with the total-beginner-print-curious and semi-intermediate skill levels in mind. The zine gives the goods on low-priced, accessible printing materials as well as toxin-free and cruelty-free approaches to the craft. Rio runs you through the basics and makes it way, mega easy to get started, touching on stuff like water-based inks, printing without a press, photo emulsion, building a one-color screenprinting press (illustrated!), and much more. If you were ever looking for a place to get started, this is your baby!

Rio gives you the very barebones of getting going with a diy silkscreening set-up: basic materials and the plans for a basic home press. A nice efficient guide for folks with more gumption than attention span.

The best zines are ones we can learn something from – a skill, a hobby, or a new perspective. The subtitle to Rio’s zine is Build a One Color Press & Start Screenprinting. Rio’s directions are clear and concise. The novice will learn about the screen, making a stencil, photo emulsion, ink, substrates, and a step-by-step guide to building a press. Reading this zine makes me want to try screenprinting a cover for a future issue of my Paper Radio zine. Pulling Ink is well illustrated and is highly recommended for those delving into the printing arts for the first time.
