Michigan Blue & Gold Map Letterpress Notebook
Michigan Blue & Gold Map - Handmade Letterpress Notebook with 40 Blank Pages, 4.25" x 5.5”.
The Wolverine Press Notebook interior pages are 70lb text weight Speckletone paper wrapped in Nightshift Blue coverstock. The paper all comes from the French Paper Company of Niles, Michigan, a family owned mill that has anchored the Southwest Michigan economy for 150 years. Each notebook cover has a letterpress printed map, in gold. The map was drawn by Augustus Mitchell for his 1852 ATLAS OF THE UNITED STATES and depicts Michigan (exterior) and Wisconsin (interior). The maps are printed from a copper plate made at Owosso Graphic Art in Owosso, Michigan using an original print of the map as reference. The books are hand cut, hand folded, and hand sewn by poets and prose writers from the Helen Zell Writers Program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. All proceeds from the sale of these books will go to support the publishing mission of Wolverine Press.
Wolverine Press is the letterpress studio of the Helen Zell Writers' Program at the University of Michigan, housed by the University Library. Wolverine Press seeks to communicate printing and publishing history, and especially Great Lakes Regional history, through craft practices. Its goal is to situate students and faculty of the Helen Zell Writers' Program, and the university more broadly, in that historic tradition, and to remind them through practice that the labor of publishing is physical as well as intellectual.
