How do I order something?
Our website is super easy to use! Click on the Add to cart button next to the items you want to order. The online ordering system calculates your total (including shipping costs) for the order. Or you can print and fill out our order form. We accept credit card, PayPal, mailed-in check, money order, or well-concealed cash.
If you order online, consider signing up for a Pioneers Press account! Save your login info so that you can order with it in the future. If you order something that we're out of, we can add credit onto your account—and when you order again, the credit will be automatically taken out!
If you don't want to use a credit card or PayPal, you can print your order form at checkout and mail it with a check, money order, or cash (wrapped in two sheets of paper). When mailing orders, include your name, address (inside the envelope, too!), phone #, e-mail address, your order, alternates (in case we are out of items you want), and a nice letter. People outside the US should pay with U.S. cash or Postal Money Orders in U.S. funds.
↑Where's my order?
When contacting us about an order, please wait at least 2 weeks after your order is sent. If it hasn't arrived, please contact us with your name and ref. code (a combination of numbers and letters, like 926db). For international orders, please wait one month after your order is sent—generally all we can tell you is when it was shipped!
You can see the status of your orders on your Pioneers Press Account you have an account. You can also check for your order on our online shipping log! Also, please provide an accurate email address in check-out. We email you shipping emails and tracking numbers for tracking your package through the Postal Service.
Most orders are mailed out the day after they are received. However, we may hold an order when we know that new copies of an out-of-stock item will arrive within 2 weeks. While we do our best to keep the site updated, items do go out of stock quickly, so please list alternates!
Orders sometimes get lost in the mail before they get to us or after we ship them. If an order worth less than $20 is lost in the mail, we will replace it on our dime. If a lost order is over $20 and you don't purchase insurance, then we will replace it for half of the total cost plus shipping.
↑Do you offer wholesale for retailers / libraries / distros?
We do! If you purchase wholesale from us, please sign up for a Pioneers Press Account—that way, we can keep track of your contact information and invoices. To find wholesale prices for items, go to any product page (or to your cart) and click on the orange "wholesale" button.
Wholesale orders must be at least $40 with a minimum of two of each item. Wholesalers are given a 20-35% discount on titles distributed by Pioneers Press and a 35% discount on Pioneers Press published titles, including all shirts, buttons, patches, and stickers.
We ask that your first two orders be paid for upfront, but after that we can offer Net-30 terms (in which you pay 30 days after placing the order). Please specify "Net-30" in online order notes. Items are generally not returnable unless they are damaged or arrangements are made ahead of time.
If you prefer, we can also take wholesale orders over the phone or via email. Need help placing your wholesale order or setting up your wholesale account? Email Elizabeth!
↑How do I return/exchange something?
We only accept exchanges if we send the wrong item or if a t-shirt does not fit properly. If we send you the wrong item or an item is missing from your package, get in touch and we'll fix our mistake. If you are exchanging a t-shirt because you ordered the wrong size, you ship it back to us, include a $2 handling fee, and the cost of shipping you a new one over to you. Please make sure you order the right size for both of our sakes! Thanks.
Due to the costs involved, we typically don't accept returns. If you would like to make special arrangements, please email us.
↑Why does the shipping cost so much?
Our website calculates the shipping for your order based on prices from the U.S. Postal Service (or other provider) and the weight of the items you've put in your cart. We add an additional handling fee to cover the cost of packing supplies and to cover a portion of the wages of the staff packing your order. We looked at the shipping prices of other publishing companies and distros and set our prices on the low end of the scale. We wish our shipping prices could be lower, but this is the best we can do without our distro going under.
↑Are there volunteer/internship opportunities at Pioneers Press?
Yes! For more information, please see our volunteer application.
↑How do I get my title distributed by Pioneers Press?
Send us a sample copy so we can check it out! Please include this Submission Form to avoid any delays in staff response and send it all to:
Pioneers Press
816 N. Main St., #200
Lansing, KS 66043-1501
If we carry your title, we'll order about 20-50 copies at a time for a zine or about 10-20 copies for a book. Please include an invoice (for zines under $6, here, and for $6 or over, here) or write out the title, quantity, retail price, your (legal) name, and address. If your zine/book is under $6 retail, we'll send you a check within 30 days of receiving your zines; if it's $6 or more, we can only offer consignment terms. We pay out a 50/50% split not including shipping costs. We also offer payment in trade for items in our catalog with a 60/40% split.
Pioneers Press specializes in DIY (Do-It-Yourself) goods. Our focus is on survival and sustainability from the farm to the city, in addition to health, gender, sexuality, and a cruelty-free lifestyle. We enjoy hand-done and unique historical, educational, instructive, cooking-related, and bicycling-related zines, plus the occasional literary work. We like zines with information that you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere and to learn about things we didn't know we were interested in. Very few of our zines could be considered traditional "magazines" and few of our book titles are from major presses.
We tend not to distribute most poetry chapbooks, art zines, or music-related publications because that's not our focus and we haven't sold them well in the past. If you are unsure, take a look around our catalog and see if your work would fit in!
We sell items mostly through retail orders but we also sell at conferences and on tour. In addition, items may be sold wholesale to stores and distributors.
Haven't heard back about your submission? E-mail us!
↑How do I submit manuscripts for publication?
We are currently accepting zine and book manuscripts for publishing consideration. Our focus for published titles is on homesteading (urban or rural); DIY, counter-culture, and cruelty-free lifestyles; how-to guides; and fiction that empowers and inspires our readers. We are not currently looking for poetry or art collections. Please include this Submission Form to avoid any delays in staff response and send it to:
Pioneers Press
816 N. Main St., #200
Lansing, KS 66043-1501
Submitted manuscripts will not be returned to the author unless requested in advance and a stamped envelope is included with the manuscript. We generally give priority to manuscripts from authors whose titles we have distributed in the past. Not sure your title is a good fit for us? Check out our catalog or shoot us an email!
↑Does Pioneers Press offer custom printing?
Yes! If you'd like to get 1" buttons made, Punch Drunk Custom buttons offers its services on our catalog. If you're interested in custom screenprinted patches, Rio at Counteract Screenprinting handles that on our catalog. We currently don't offer custom sticker or t-shirt printing, and recommend Diesel Fuel Prints. If you have questions, please get in touch!
↑Do you all carry eBooks? How does that work?
Yes! You can find our eBooks here.
Our eBooks are available as DRM-free downloads in ePub and PDF format. After you check out, you'll be provided with a temporary download link, and then the files are yours to do with as you please!
ePub is a free and open eBook standard that will work on most readers, and PDF is a universal fixed format that reads well on computers, too. Pioneers currently doesn't offer Kindle downloads on its catalog, so conversion of ePub to Kindle format (using a program like Calibre) is necessary.
And why does Pioneers Press carry eBooks? Many powerful self-published titles are difficult to keep in stock for independent authors, so eBooks help keep their titles available. And for titles that are in stock, having the option between paper and digital helps the title reach more readers!
↑What is a "distro"/ distribution?
As a distro, we distribute authors' and artists' works to you. When we distribute a zine, for example, the author sends us a stack of the final products, we list those on our website, and then customers can purchase the zines through us. This helps a diverse array of creators get more attention by housing their work under one roof--in this case, Pioneers Press!
↑What does the subscription mean "every new zine you carry"?
We are constantly ordering new books and zines and usually have a few new arrivals every week. With your zine subscription we will send you every single zine that we add to our catalog that has a retail value of $5 or less. We also often order restocks of awesome zines that we've carried for years, and you'll get copies of those if we haven't sent them to you already. We'll keep track of what we send you, so no matter how many times you re-up your subscription you won't get the same zine twice.
↑I bought a $50 subscription but then I found a $10 book I want. How do I use the money in my zine credit account to purchase it?
Just check out normally and our system will automatically pull from the money in your account to cover the cost of the book and postage.
↑What if you get a TON of stuff in during a two week period? Is it possible I'll only get one or two shipments?
What if I don't WANT stickers, patches, and buttons in my subscription? Can't I just get the zines?
How will I know when my subscription has expired? What do I do if I want to keep getting all your new zines?
What if there's like $0.50 left in my account for the subscription and that won't cover the cost of another zine?
Is there a wholesaler zine subscription option?
Sure is! If you're interested in automatically receiving shipments of all our new titles for your distro, shop, library, etc. get in touch with Jessie and she'll work out an arrangement that meets your needs.
